Kyson, a Year 6 student, was identified for project support due to his additional needs and limited confidence in taking on leadership opportunities within school.
Staff noted that while Kyson was enthusiastic about PE, he often hesitated to engage in group leadership or peer mentoring activities. Kyson’s engagement began through the Premier League Primary Stars Extra curricular Boccia Club, a highly inclusive and accessible sport that allowed him to participate fully alongside his peers.
Sessions were tailored to provide structured guidance, encouragement, and opportunities for Kyson to develop decision-making and teamwork skills. The delivery included weekly boccia sessions with the Community Trust coaches, where Kyson could practice both his technical skills and social interaction in a supportive environment.
Through his love of boccia, Kyson gradually grew in confidence and began taking on leadership roles within the sessions. He progressed from participating to leading mini boccia games during lunch times for younger students, demonstrating the rules, organising teams, and encouraging fair play.
Coaches also supported him to prepare for a more formal leadership role within the school’s Sports Leaders programme, providing mentoring and guidance to strengthen his communication and organisational skills. Impact Kyson’s development has been significant. Teachers have observed increased confidence, improved communication skills, and greater independence.
He now actively contributes to the school community by supporting younger pupils during PE, fostering inclusivity, and acting as a positive role model. Kyson himself has expressed his enjoyment and pride: “I love helping the younger students play boccia. It makes me feel important and proud.” The project has also benefitted the wider school community, as younger pupils respond positively to Kyson’s leadership, creating a more inclusive and engaged PE environment.
His experience demonstrates how Premier League Primary Stars can empower students with additional needs, developing confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility that extends beyond the classroom.
