Case Study - Harvey

Harvey has been attending Premier League Kicks sessions delivered by Mansfield Town Community Trust for a number of years, regularly participating at the One Call Stadium and other community venues. Harvey lives with ADHD and has spent time outside of mainstream education, receiving mentoring support to help him overcome barriers affecting his education, behaviour and personal development. Premier League Kicks was identified as an opportunity to provide Harvey with a safe, structured environment where he could build positive relationships, engage in regular physical activity and develop key life skills.
Throughout his time on the programme, Harvey has become a consistent and valued member of the sessions. Coaches have worked closely with him using positive reinforcement, clear expectations and relationship-based youth work to support his development. By attending regularly, Harvey has built trusting relationships with staff and participants, helping him improve his behaviour, communication and confidence in social situations. Football has provided a positive outlet, while the supportive environment has enabled him to develop friendships, improve his emotional wellbeing and feel a genuine sense of belonging.
"Since coming to Premier League Kicks, I've become much more confident speaking to new people and making friends. I've learned how to work as part of a team, respect others and control my emotions better. The coaches have always been there to support me, and they've helped me believe in myself. I also enjoyed the workshops because they taught me about mental health, respect and different opportunities for the future."
Over time, Harvey has demonstrated significant progress across several Premier League Kicks outcomes. His behaviour during sessions has improved considerably, he now communicates more confidently with others, and he has become a positive role model for younger participants. The consistency of attending sessions has also supported his overall wellbeing by providing routine, positive adult role models and a place where he feels safe, valued and included.
One of Harvey's proudest achievements came through his involvement in the recent Premier League Kicks Regional Tournament at St George's Park. Representing Mansfield Town Community Trust, Harvey embraced the experience from start to finish, taking part in a range of educational workshops and competitive fixtures alongside participants from across the country. The workshops allowed him to learn about important topics beyond football while meeting new people and developing his confidence in unfamiliar environments.

A personal highlight for Harvey came during a penalty shootout, where he produced a crucial save to help his team at an important stage of the competition. The moment reflected the confidence, composure and resilience he has developed through his continued involvement in Premier League Kicks. Harvey thoroughly enjoyed the experience of representing Mansfield Town Community Trust at such a prestigious venue, and the team were recognised with the Fair Play Award, demonstrating the respect, teamwork and positive behaviours they displayed throughout the event.
Harvey's journey demonstrates the wider impact of Premier League Kicks beyond football. By providing consistent support, positive role models and an inclusive environment, the programme has helped him overcome barriers, improve his confidence, behaviour and wellbeing, while creating opportunities that he may not otherwise have experienced. His progression is a clear example of how sustained engagement can positively influence a young person's development both on and off the pitch.
"I'd definitely tell them to come along because everyone is really welcoming and friendly. It doesn't matter what your football ability is – you'll have fun, make new friends and the coaches always help you. It's given me loads of confidence and opportunities, like playing at St George's Park, which was one of the best experiences I've ever had. My favourite moment was saving an important penalty in the shootout. If you come to Kicks, you never know what opportunities you'll get."
