Young Stags End Season with Penalty Shootout Victory Over Sheffield Wednesday

The Young Stags rounded off their CEFA season in dramatic fashion on Wednesday 13th May, hosting Sheffield Wednesday in a friendly fixture at the One Call Stadium as part of our ‘Play on the Pitch’ events.

Played in difficult, muddy conditions and heavy rain throughout the evening, the match was a competitive and entertaining final game from start to finish. Despite the unpredictable weather, both sides showed great determination and commitment in an end-to-end game full of chances, big moments and late drama.

The Young Stags went into the break with a narrow 2-1 lead after an energetic first half, setting up an exciting second 45 minutes under the lights at the One Call Stadium. After an evenly contested 90 minutes, the scores were level at 3-3, with Mansfield finding a dramatic late equaliser to keep themselves in the game. Alfie, Lewis and Cody were all on the scoresheet for the Young Stags.

With the game tied at full-time, a penalty shootout followed to determine the overall winner. Mansfield held their nerve to secure a close 5-4 victory on penalties, with Alfie, George, Chris, Jermaine and Reuben all converting from the spot.

The match was played in excellent spirits throughout, with both teams fully embracing the occasion and the challenging conditions. It was a fitting way to wrap up the season, particularly for those players making their final appearance within our Post-16 programme.

A big thank you also goes to Sheffield Wednesday for making the journey and helping create a fantastic occasion to close the season.
